The Yaruwok Community Bank in Bokondini was set up to provide a safe place for local people to keep their money, so that they could save for a business, for their children’s schooling, or for something else important to them. Currently there are 278 men and women savers and it continues to grow.
The change that people want to see in their communities takes time and also requires a lot of people working together. Through the Bank other initiatives have been founded, as people learn about what can happen with better money management. Around ten people have started small businesses.
Papua Partners is providing training and mentoring for these small initiatives and momentum is growing, as others see the rewards that sound economic planning and management can bring.
