Yasumat teacher mentors – these are the modern Papua heroes. They walk from school to school in the remote highlands of Papua, visiting schools, supporting teachers and providing curriculum training.
Over the last two years they have been working very hard training teachers from 67 schools throughout the region of Yahukimo, both their own church schools and government schools. This program ensures that children stay in their communities with their families and can get good primary education. So often families, or even children on their own, leave communities to get education as the local schools do not function. This means children are alone in towns and often put in very vulnerable positions, especially young girls.
Currently Yasumat are receiving funding for this vital initiative from the USAID-PRIORITAS program. However, this funding will cease at the end of 2016. Papua Partners support the management of this program. Please consider supporting the Yasumat education initiative by clicking here.
