In Bokondini there is a group of women from 15 different communities who bear a heavy burden for their children and wider families. They want them to live long lives, finish school and get jobs. This is a normal dream.
But, in Bokondini, nearly every family has experienced death from AIDS. There are funerals most weeks for young people who are in school far away from family and who never get to the next stage of their life. These women have got together to spread the word that it does not have to be like this. Life can be different. They meet together twice a month and share stories, read health materials and pray together. They then go and share what they have learnt in their church women’s groups. Recently they have started going, as a group, to visit each others churches to perform dramas, share information and encourage the congregations to take action.
Now this group wants to build their capacity further and become Community Health Workers. They took the first step along this journey by inviting another of our partners, Yasumat, to come to Bokondini and provide an initial training in community health. This was a very exciting time, but only the start of their journey. The first training was funded by Papua Partners and the group contributed vegetables and sugar.
